3DMark03 is an older but still perfectly valid version of the highly favoured 3DMark series. By combining full DirectX support with completely new tests and graphics, 3DMark03 Pro continues the legacy of being the industry standard benchmark. The high quality game tests, image quality tests, sound tests and others give you an extremely accurate overview of your system抯 current gaming performance. Benchmarking has never been so good!
3DMark03 Pro Game Tests
- Game Test 1: Wings of Fury (DX7)
Represents simulation type game usage on lower-end graphics hardware. It is an air combat scenario where a group of Allied bombers are attacked by enemy fighter planes. A low number of polygons are used, but the test has heavy use of particles. Planes are rendered with 4 texture layers. - Game Test 2 – Alpha Squadron (DX8)
Represents first-person shooter type game usage on medium-end graphics hardware. It is a space-ship battle scenario where defenders fight off enemy soldiers attempting to board. Vertex and Pixel shaders are used extensively. Some cameras have Depth of Field and Bloom post processing effects. Light sources generate dynamic shadows using stencil buffers. The test also has use of particles and real-time physics. - Game Test 3 – Troll’s Lair (DX8)
Represents role-playing game usage on medium-end graphics hardware. In the scenario, an adventurer discovers two trolls in a hidden room and combat ensues. Vertex and Pixel shaders are used extensively. Some cameras have Depth of Field and Bloom post processing effects Light sources generate dynamic shadows using stencil buffers. Real-time physics is used for characters falling and collisions. Character抯 hair is anisotropically lit and uses a custom physics model. - Game test 4 – Nature II (DX9)
Represent expected DirectX 9 usage on high-end graphics hardware. The scenario is of a dynamic nature scene with swaying trees and blades of grass along a running stream. Tree leaves and grass blades are modeled individually using vertex shaders. Lake surface and sky surface are produced with pixel shaders. Higher color range used for calculating over bright reflection and lighting.
3DMark03 Pro Feature Tests
- Feature test – Fill Rate (Single-Texturing)
Measures single-texture pixel shading performance how fast the graphics card is capable of drawing single textures onto 3D objects. A single texture is applied to each of 64 objects. - Feature test – Fill Rate (Multi-Texturing)
Measures multi-texture pixel shading performance how fast the graphics card is capable of drawing multiple textures onto 3D objects. 64 textures are applied to an object; this test benefits from the use of a graphics cards capable of applying multiple textures in a single pass. - Feature test – Character Throughput
Measures vertex shading performance how fast characters can be skinned and animated. 30 troll characters with 5500 triangles each are animated. 4 texture layers are applied using 1.1 pixel shaders. - Feature test – Rag Troll
Measures the ability to multi-process CPU workload and graphics workload; this test uses rag doll physics and vertex processing for these workloads respectively. A set of troll characters fall from an altitude; they are vertex shader skinned and their movements are dictated by rag doll character physics. - Feature Test – Procedural Texturing
Measures the performance of procedural volumetric texturing; wood and marble textures are generated using 2.0 pixel shaders. A wood texture applied on an elephant is calculated using a 3D turbulence texture; a marble texture applied on a rhino is calculated using a 3D noise texture. - Feature test – 3D Sound Test
3DMark03 features an exciting new addition as set of 3D sound tests. Besides being an interesting demonstration of use of 3D sounds, the tests measure the performance overhead of using 3D sound sources. The scenario is similar to that used in Game Test 1; this time, using the FMOD sound library by Firelight Technologies, sound sources are attached to every airplane, gun, hit, and explosion.
3DMark03 Pro Tools
- Pro Tool – Pro Online ResultBrowser
The Pro Online ResultBrowser (ORB) is designed and developed specially for 3DMark03 Pro users. In addition to the normal comparison functionalities you can do multicomparisons, CPU / GFX chipset comparisons, get detailed system info and much much more. The Pro ORB extends 3DMark03 Pro to the extreme! - Pro Tool – Benchmark Image Quality
This utility allows you to select specific frames from any of the Game Tests; that frame is rendered and the subsequent screenshot is saved in the main 3DMark03 install directory. - Pro Tool – Synthetic Image Quality
Running this utility produces a fixed scene, along with specific details concerning the type/level of texture filtering and anti-aliasing used. You can then adjust various driver settings or hardware configurations and have a clearer understanding as to their specific effect. Such a feature is popular with professional testers of graphics adapters. - Pro Tool – CPU Test
The CPU plays an important part of any 3D game, so 3DMark03 includes a separate test for analysing the impact the main processor has on gaming. - Pro Tool – Batch Run
Batch Run has an easy to use wizard for choosing the batch run settings. For example, you can let your PC run through all tests on all resolutions and with all rendering pipelines. It can all be done in one single batch run.
3DMark03 Pro Extras
- Extras- Demo
3DMark03 Pro also includes an exciting and awe-inspiring demo, pushing your system to its limits!
